Software and security updates are delivered to your MiWorkspace computer automatically. All updates are tested for compatibility and performance with U-M systems before they reach your device, and significant updates go through a beta testing group first.
Most updates happen in the background and won't interrupt your work. When an update does require action on your part, you'll receive an email from U-M Information and Technology Services (ITS) with details.
What Do I Need to Do?
To make sure updates install smoothly:
- Log off your computer at least once a week.
- Restart when prompted — you can delay until you're ready or until the stated deadline.
How Do I Install Updates?
- Windows: Use Software Center to view and install available updates. When prompted by a notification in your system tray or a pop-up window, restart your computer at a time that works for you up until the stated deadline.
- Mac: Use Managed Software Center to view and install updates. Updates released on Thursday are generally available to download Friday morning.
What Types of Updates Will I See?
- Required updates have an installation deadline. If you don't install them by the deadline, they will install automatically. These are typically security updates.
- Available updates can be installed at your convenience. While optional, keeping software current ensures continued support and compatibility.
When Are Updates Released?
Regular updates are released weekly on Thursdays:
- Windows: Thursday between 6:30–9:30 p.m.
- Mac: Thursday between 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Occasionally, updates may be released outside this schedule. For example, to address a critical security vulnerability as quickly as possible.
