ITS AFS Web Hosting Retirement

ITS AFS Web Hosting will be retired in December 2026 to properly manage available university resources and better secure the university’s IT infrastructure. If you have a website hosted on AFS Web Hosting, you must migrate to another hosting provider by December 2026.

The ITS Web Hosting team is available to consult with you and your unit on the best option. You can set up a consultation meeting with the Web Hosting team by emailing [email protected]

U-M Procurement also has a list of web agencies that can develop and migrate websites.

AFS Unit Websites Dashboard

Unit representatives and website owners can check if their website is still on AFS on the AFS Unit Websites Dashboard.

WordPress and Drupal Websites

If your website runs on Drupal or WordPress, you must migrate to U-M Pantheon or another hosting provider by December 2026. We recommend starting the process now.

U-M Pantheon supports WordPress, WordPress Multisite, and Drupal. U-M Pantheon websites can be created and managed using the ITS Web Hosting Services Portal (U-M login required).

Non-WordPress and Drupal Web Applications

All PHP web applications must move out of AFS by December 2026. The ITS Container Service provides a high-availability, secure environment for hosting containerized applications and services. Training videos are available to help you learn the essentials, from an introduction to basic concepts to deploying an application and allowing traffic to your application. You can also learn more about the benefits of the Container Service on the ITS website.

Personal and Group (Static) Websites

If you own a Personal and Group website in AFS, you have no action to take at this time. ITS will move these websites out of AFS on site owners' behalf in 2026. Refer to the project FAQs for more information.

Decommissioning

If you no longer need your website or web application, or it is no longer being used, email [email protected] for assistance in deleting the site or app from AFS.

Project Communications

The project team sends monthly targeted emails to the MCommunity groups (containing website owners) responsible for each unit’s AFS websites. These emails will include a list of sites that need to be migrated to a different platform.

Note: MCommunity groups should contain more than one person that is responsible to maintain and upgrade websites when needed. The MCommunity Group associated with a website can be found by looking up the website on the AFS Unit Website Dashboard. If the MCommunity Group that is associated with a website is incorrect, contact the Web Hosting team at [email protected] and indicate the correct MCommunity group that should be used for future communications.
