Windows OS Licensing on Campus

Note Fall 2025: Windows 10 support will officially end on October 14, 2025. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11. Those who cannot upgrade to Windows 11 can purchase an ESU license to continue receiving Windows 10 updates for another year.

Overview

University owned devices are eligible/licensed for Windows OS under our Microsoft Campus Agreement as an upgrade only.  You may upgrade any Microsoft OS purchased with the computer. You may not use these licenses to put Windows on a machine which was purchased without an Operating System, or with a no-cost operating system such as freeDOS or Linux. If the computer was not purchased with a Microsoft OS, you must first purchase a Microsoft OS license before you can upgrade via the U-M licenses. Apple Macintosh users may use these Microsoft licenses to create a Windows machine on their Mac via Parallels or Boot Camp.

Eligibility

Device Requirements:

  • University owned
  • KMS activated
  • Upgrade only (described above)
