Testing Network Connections

Testing Ann Arbor Campus Wired Connections

Wired speed test results should be more consistent. Most Ann Arbor campus most locations have 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) Ethernet connections. However, some locations still have 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps connections. You should expect that upload and download speeds do not often reach the peak theoretical capacity of the network connection.

For example: on a 1000 Mbps connection, normal upload and download speeds will be in the 600-800 Mbps range.

For instructions on testing your wired connections, review Test Wired Network Connection Speeds on Your Windows or Macintosh Computer.

Testing Wireless Connections

Wireless speed test results vary based on number of devices and people in an area, obstructions between devices and access points, and interference. You may wish to run multiple tests on different days to see if your results are consistent for a given location. A single test with undesirable results does not necessarily mean there is an ongoing problem.

WiFi speeds in Ann Arbor campus locations also depend on the above factors, but tend to be faster than off-campus locations due to the scale and capacity of our network design and equipment.
