Networks

ITS provides the university's communication backbone, connecting U-M to the Internet and to private educational and research networks.

  • 10GbE Network Connection
    10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) attachments are available on the UMnet Backbone network that provides services to all UM-Ann Arbor campus units except the Health System.
  • Backbone Connections
    Backbone networks are interconnected through the U-M Backbone Interconnect Network (UMBIN) and from UMBIN to the state network (Merit) and beyond to the commodity Internet and to private educational and research networks such as MiNet, Internet 2, and CIC OmniPoP.
  • Fixed Wireless
    ITS Fixed Wireless Service provides high speed connectivity to the UMNet Backbone from an off-campus remote office when fiber optic cable is not an option.
  • Michigan Innovation Network (MiNet)
    MiNet is a high speed data network for research and education points throughout Michigan and around the world.
  • Station Cable
    Station cable can provide connectivity for one to six 4-pair jacks on each communications outlet in a room.
  • U-M Virtual Firewall Service
    The U-M Virtual Firewall Service is a network security service available to academic and administrative units on the Ann Arbor campus.
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN)
    The University of Michigan’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides U-M users with access to university resources and encrypts traffic on university and public networks.
  • WiFi
    In-building wireless (WiFi) networks allow faculty, staff, students, sponsored affiliates, and guests to communicate through wireless local area networks on laptops, tablets, cellular phones, and other devices.
